Setting up Novacom on Windows 7 - Easier Method

This is an alternate method from the WebOS-Internals one, on how to install Novacom on Windows 7. This one is for the average user who wants an easy install.

First off, you'll need to download the WebOSDoctor recovery rom (or if you're using the current WebOS Quick Install, you'll already have this file): Sprint WebOSDoctor 1.2.1 or Bell (Canada).

Download and install Orca. It's a tool from Windows SDK to easily edit Microsoft Installer packages. It's a very quick and simple install.

Go to where you downloaded the WebOSDoctor recovery rom and right click on it. Choose "Open with", then "Choose Default Program" and choose whatever archive manager you use (WinZip, WinRar, 7-Zip, etc.).
- If you don't have any archive manager, I recommend 7-Zip, it's free.
- If your archive manager isn't listed, hit the "Browse" button and navigate to find it.
- Make sure "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is not checked. (we want "Java(TM) Platform SE binary" to always be the default)

Open up the resources folder. Scroll down through it till you find the 2 MSI files (NovacomInstaller_x64.msi and NovacomInstaller_x86.msi).
- For 32bit Windows 7, extract "NovacomInstaller_x86.msi"
- For 64bit Windows 7, extract "NovacomInstaller_x64.msi"

Right click on the extracted MSI file. Click the "Edit with Orca"

On the left "Tables" list click "InstallExecuteSequence" and on the main table, look for "installumdf.08B8BE2B_9174_49D1_84B0_40324FD7DE34" and delete it. Save and close.

Run the msi. Everything should install properly

FYI, apparrently this method of Novacom installtion worked for a friend who couldn't get novacom installed on his 32bit vista computer

yep. That's all it needs to do. Novacom is not actually a full program, simply a background service, which is why there's not setup or anything.

perfect. i installed virtual box before i tried this on x64 and everything seems to be running correctly.

On my vista and xp everything installed great and worked on the emulator only./ removing that line from the msi did it thank you so much your awsome./ i'll be sure to pass the tidbits along and give the credit where it's due...this rocks!!!!!!

I'm not trying to knock your tut but how is this easier than the current method.

When installing the PalmSDK, right click and run as administrator.
Make sure you install the sdk to C:\Pre\SDK.

Last I checked, the current way to install for Windows 7 is Novacom with Windows 7 - WebOS Internals (as mentioned in my first post)

Jason, it's a WIKI... Please, feel free to update that page with the Orca method and to link it to Accessing Linux with a tag to go there if your windows 7 install fails.

It will be far more FINDABLE there than buried deep in Forum history.

I apologize dude, i thought you were posting a windows tutorial on getting the sdk installed on windows 7. I didn't notice your tutorial was specific to the novacom driver. Thats what happens when you type while sleepy.

Original instruction did not work until I attempted to charge phone after being completely drained. Novacom recognised Pre only then, allowing communication.

what worked for me, is to go back into dev mode on pre "upupdown etc" turn off dev mode then after reset turn it back on. once I did that the new hard ware box did not return. then I went into device manager on pc right clicked palm novacom driver and updated driver, by searching in palm\palm,inc\novacom. it found driver than I was up and running. this is on vista 64bit
